A Welcome Guide
to Consignment

From your wardrobe — to the right new home.

Consignment is simply this: you share pieces from your wardrobe with us, we find them the right new home, and we send you payment when they sell. You don't have to photograph anything, list anything, or negotiate with anyone. That's our job.

What to Send

Not every piece in your wardrobe is right for consignment — but more of it probably qualifies than you'd expect. Here's how to think about it.

Pieces that do well

  • Suits, sport coats, and blazers — especially natural fibers: wool, cashmere, linen
  • Dress and fine casual trousers
  • Dress and casual shirts in quality fabrics
  • Knitwear — sweaters, cardigans, turtlenecks
  • Outerwear — overcoats, topcoats, field jackets, raincoats
  • Shoes and boots in leather or fine suede
  • Ties, pocket squares, belts, and leather accessories
  • Luxury brands — Brunello Cucinelli, Loro Piana, Zegna, Canali, and similar

A simple test for each piece

Hold it up and ask yourself three things:

  • Is it clean and free of stains?
  • Is it in good condition — no missing buttons, no broken zippers, no significant wear?
  • Would you feel comfortable giving it to a friend?

If yes to all three, it belongs in the box.

If you're unsure about a specific piece, send us a photo and we'll let you know. There's no obligation and no pressure — we'd rather you ask than wonder.

What we're generally not able to place

  • Pieces with staining, significant pilling, or visible damage
  • Very casual everyday wear — t-shirts, athletic wear, denim under $200 retail
  • Pieces without any care or brand labels

Getting Pieces to Us

There are two ways to work with us. Choose whichever feels more comfortable.

Option A — Send photos first

A few simple snapshots from your phone are enough — front, back, and the inside label. We'll review them within a day or two and let you know which pieces we'd like to receive and what we think they'll sell for.

Option B — Send everything at once

Simply box things up and send them over. We'll do the assessment here, photograph everything, and share our findings with you before anything is listed. Nothing will be priced or posted without your agreement.

How to pack your pieces

1.
Fold garments neatly — rolling creates creases in structured pieces.
2.
Wrap in tissue paper or a clean cotton pillowcase before placing in the box.
3.
Heaviest items at the bottom — coats and trousers below, lighter pieces on top.
4.
For shoes, box individually or wrap each one separately to hold their shape.
5.
Include a note inside with your name and a phone number or email address.
Please avoid plastic dry-cleaning bags — they can trap moisture during transit. A regular cardboard shipping box works perfectly.

Shipping guidance

  • USPS Priority Mail — reliable and affordable for most shipments
  • UPS or FedEx Ground — preferred for larger or heavier packages
  • Declared value shipping — recommended for pieces over $500

Once shipped, share the tracking number with us and we'll watch for the arrival. If you're local to the Jersey City area, we're happy to arrange a pickup directly.

What Happens Next

Once your pieces arrive, here's what to expect.

Assessment

We examine each piece carefully — checking condition, confirming sizing, researching comparable sales, and identifying the right price. This typically takes two to three business days.

Your consignment receipt

Before anything is listed, we'll send you a consignment receipt listing every piece received, its condition, and the price we propose to list it at. You'll review and approve before we proceed. Nothing goes live without your sign-off.

Listing and sale

Once approved, we photograph each piece and list it through our network — including Alfargo's Marketplace and direct client outreach. We handle all inquiries, negotiations, and transactions on your behalf. Most pieces sell within 30 to 90 days.

Payment

When a piece sells, we notify you and issue payment promptly — by check, Zelle, or bank transfer, whichever you prefer.

Nothing will be priced, posted, or sold without your written approval. You remain in control throughout.

Our Commission

Our fee is a flat 30% commission on the final sale price of each garment. It covers everything — assessment, photography, listing, client outreach, and handling all buyer correspondence. No hidden fees, no surprises.

Your Questions, Answered

These are the questions we hear most often. If yours isn't here, please just ask.

Do I have to deal with photographs myself?
No. If you choose to send photos before shipping, a few quick snaps from your phone are all we need. If you'd rather skip that step entirely and simply box everything up, we handle all photography here.
What if I change my mind and want something back?
You may request any unsold piece back at any time. Just let us know and we'll arrange its return. Shipping costs are at your expense; if you're local, you're welcome to collect in person.
How long will it take to sell?
Many pieces sell within the first 30 days, particularly in-season items and well-known brands. Others may take 60 to 90 days. We'll always keep you informed and will discuss adjusting the price if a piece has been sitting.
Will you sell things without asking me first?
Never. We will not list anything without your written approval, and we will not sell anything below the agreed price without discussing it with you first.
What happens to pieces that don't sell?
At the end of your consignment period — typically 90 days — you can have them returned, extend the listing period, or discuss a price adjustment. We'll reach out before the period ends.
How do I receive my money?
By check, Zelle, or bank transfer — whichever you prefer. Payment is sent promptly after a sale clears, along with a brief note confirming what sold and your net amount.
I'm not sure if my things are valuable enough. Should I still reach out?
Yes, please. We'd rather have a short conversation and tell you honestly than have you wonder. There is no minimum threshold to reach out, and never any pressure or obligation.
Is my clothing safe while it's with you?
We take great care of every piece in our custody and handle everything as if it were our own. We recommend retaining any insurance coverage on high-value items through your homeowner's or renter's policy until the pieces sell.
